Blizzard Entertainment Working On A New Online Open-World RPG

Blizzard Entertainment has an unannounced multiplayer open-world first-person RPG in the works, recent job listing reveals.

As of recent, Blizzard Entertainment has been the centre of attention in the gaming community. With the announcement of Diablo Immortal and Overwatch 2, the company seems to be very focused on its franchises. It seems like the company has all hands on gear, as it now has another unannounced game in development and this one could be a completely new franchise.

Earlier today, we came across a recent job listing on the Blizzard Entertainment website for the Associate Content Designer position at the company’s headquarters based in Irvine, California for a team working on “unannounced project.” The description for the job listing reads, “Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a talented and passionate associate content designer to collaborate with our design team for an unannounced project. As an associate content designer, you will foster Blizzard’s core value of ‘Gameplay First’ as you collaborate with a team of designers, engineers, and artists responsible for crafting this unannounced project’s world.”

Furthermore, the job listing iterates that the unannounced game will feature open-world content more than once in the “Responsibilities” section for the position, which suggests that the upcoming game will certainly be an open-world one. “Design and implementation of new events and open world content from conception to the final stages of polish,” it states.

Reading the description for the job listing further, we get to know some more information about this unannounced game. Under the “Requirements” section for the position, one of the requirements is the “understanding of RPG reward mechanics.” So, it seems like the new game would be an RPG one.

In addition to this, the description also mentions “experience working on an FPS game” and “previous design experience for Online/Multiplayer games” in the “Pluses” section, which suggests that the unannounced game from Blizzard Entertainment will not only be an open-world RPG but will also be an FPS and feature an online multiplayer.

So far, the company has released a few RPG franchises, such as Diablo and World of Warcraft, and FPS franchises, such as Overwatch. However, there hasn’t been any game that combines both genres while being open-world and featuring online multiplayer. So, this certainly seems like a completely new franchise from the company.

While the job listing doesn’t mention which platform the game is being made for, a few more job listings on the Blizzard Entertainment website posted around the same time as this one mention an unannounced mobile game. One job listing for the Senior Software Engineer, Gameplay position at the company’s headquarters based in Irvine, California reads, “We are looking for a talented mobile developer, who is as excited as we are to create amazing gameplay experiences for our players.”

Now, the job listings of the unannounced mobile game don’t mention the genre or any information about the upcoming game, so these could be two distinct games that Blizzard Entertainment is developing. However, since all of these job listings were posted around the same time and for the same studio, it’s safe to assume that they could be related.

In February, the Chief Executive Officer at Blizzard Entertainment, Bobby Kotick, confirmed that the company has “multiple, mobile, free-to-play Warcraft experiences” in development, so the recent job listings seem to make sense. Regardless, this is huge news for players of the cherished Blizzard Entertainment franchises.
