God Of War Is Among The Most-Played Franchises On PS Plus’ Classics Catalog

Ghost of Tsushima and Stray lead the way in the Extra tier of PS Plus.

Story Highlights

  • The God of War franchise has become the most popular on PS Plus’ classics catalog, with God of War III becoming a fan favorite.
  • Resident Evil and The Last of Us also made the top three in the classic titles list.
  • On the other hand, Stray topped Extra’s game catalog, sporting a higher rank than Ghost of Tsushima and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

As per new stats revealed on the PlayStation website, God of War is one of the most-played franchises in the PS Plus Premium classic games catalog. The series ruled the most expensive tier of the service, with God of War III Remastered also being the most popular title among trophy hunters. It beat blockbuster franchises like Resident Evil and The Last of Us, which found their own spots at second and third places in the catalog.

Sony released all of this new info as part of a new contest on its website that rewards you with a PlayStation 5 and a PlayStation VR2. According to the stats, July 2022 was the month with the most hours of games played on PlayStation Plus with Sunday being the favored day to play. In addition, Japan has the most hours played per person in the subscription’s catalog, and overall, each person tried 7.4 games on average.

Moving on to the titles in question, Stray was the most in-demand game on the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog since last year. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ghost of Tsushima followed it at No.2 and No.3 as the studio’s head of subscription, Nick Maguire, previously revealed in an interview. Furthermore, Ghost of Tsushima was the top game for trophy hunters in the Extra tier of PS Plus, which isn’t explained but we assume it’s positive.

Horizon Forbidden West also received a lot of love as players covered a flying distance of over 4.602 million meters in the adventure game. Moving on to the classics catalog, 2011 was the hottest throwback year for users as the God of War franchise ruled PlayStation Plus Premium, with 2015’s God of War III Remastered being a major hit among subscribers.

Resident Evil also made the top three in this list, with many of its titles being available on the service. A surprising inclusion is the presence of The Last of Us at No.3 as it only has one game on the Premium tier compared to multiple titles from the other franchises. Hence, it seems like the success of the HBO TV series has really prompted players to try out the 2013 Naughty Dog classic.

Sony’s reworked version of PlayStation Plus only launched in June 2022 and has been a major success since then. Nick Maguire, the company’s head of subscription, revealed that players have spent 7x more time playing games on the service than they did on PS Now. Furthermore, the service’s more-expensive Premium tier has accumulated more players than Extra, which is a big win for Sony.

Maguire also uncovered how Ghost of Tsushima had amassed the most gameplay hours of any game on the service during this interview and the trophy stats do reflect that. Moreover, even though Stray brought in a lot of players, the Sony VP confirmed that day-one releases will not happen for first-party titles. Overall, the new version of PS Plus is looking like a big success for Sony, and you can purchase any of the three tiers you like.
