PlayStation Portal Completely Sells Out 2 Days After Launch

The handheld gaming accessory has been a massive success in the US and UK.

Story Highlights

  • PlayStation Portal is out of stock in the US and the UK.
  • Scalpers have got their hands on the portable device, with listings on Ebay retailing it for over £200.
  • The handheld is restocking in November in the Uk while the US consumers will have to wait till December.

PlayStation Portal, the new hardware accessory for the PlayStation 5, has already sold out in the United States and United Kingdom, 2 days after release. As revealed by the regional PlayStation Stores of the two countries, the stock for the handheld has run dry and players will have to wait until at least next week to get their hands on another one of these.

According to the UK PlayStation Direct Store, the PlayStation Portal is not available right now and fans won’t get an update on the stock before November 22. One of the reasons the handheld is inaccessible right now is also scalping. Thanks to a report by Eurogamer, it looks like scalpers have hoarded the PlayStation Portal as it has already appeared on eBay.

The handheld is selling for over £200, the retail price of PlayStation Portal, with listings ranging from £250 to £290 and some even going over the £300 mark. Hence, scalpers have hoarded the cloud device and are part of the reason it’s sold out. On the other hand, the situation in the US is even worse with the consoles possibly not getting restocks until December.

As per the US PlayStation Store, fans will have to wait until early December to get an update on the PlayStation Portal restock. Therefore, the handheld will probably be available by the time the Holiday season rolls around.

Initially called Project Q, Sony revealed the PlayStation Portal in May of this year during its PlayStation Showcase. A remote play device, the handheld allows gamers to play PS5 games without having to use their TV by connecting to the console via Wi-Fi. Hence, you can easily play Spider-Man 2 while watching a movie on a bigger screen.

Even though it’s a really nifty device, the PlayStation Portal does have a few limitations. PS VR2 games and the PlayStation Plus Premium cloud games are not playable on the handheld as per Sony. But, with DualSense support and an average price point, the console selling out isn’t really surprising.

PlayStation Portal isn’t the only PlayStation 5 hardware Sony has on the schedule. the PlayStation 5 Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds are set to launch in February 2024 and will be compatible with the cloud headset. With AI-enhanced noise-canceling, retractable microphone, PS Portal compatibility, and a $150 price point, it’s easy to see why people are excited about these upcoming accessories.
