Minecraft: Best Level To Find Diamonds [Our Tips]

Find out the optimal level for Diamond Mining, along with some other tips and tricks!

In Minecraft, after gathering basic tools and making a base, it is time to explore the caves. Unlike Iron which can be found on top of mountains or simple cave entrances, Diamonds are difficult to find due to their lower spawn rate. However, knowing the best level for diamonds in Minecraft can make the process easier for you!

Key Takeaways
  • Diamonds are one of the strongest materials found in Minecraft.
  • You need a Diamond pickaxe to mine ores like Obsidian and Ancient Debris.
  • The best level for getting diamonds is between Y: -53 and Y: -61 in caves.
  • It is suggested to mine at Y: -53 to avoid getting damaged by lava.

Important: This information was collected from Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.4, the latest version currently.

Where Can You Find Diamonds?

Cave In Minecraft

In Minecraft, ever since the Caves & Cliffs update mining has changed a lot. Diamonds do not spawn randomly in caves, rather they are found mostly near bedrock. When going to the cave, make sure you have at least an iron enchanted armor and a shield with you.

Caves are filled with all kinds of mobs. Other than having the best weapons with you, there are still some things that I suggest you do when going to the caves.

  • Have at least a full stack of torches with you.
  • Always have an enchanted bow and a shield.
  • You should have wooden planks so that you can craft torches or a crafting table to make more weapons on the go.
  • Make sure to put torches on your way in so that you don’t get lost on your way back.
  • Have plenty of space in your Inventory.

While playing Minecraft press the F3 key on your keyboard. This will open all in-game stats including the game FPS and your coordinates. In XYZ coordinates, the Y coordinates tell which level you are on. After the Caves & Cliffs update, the spawning of all ores has changed. The best level to find diamonds in Minecraft is usually between -52 and -63. I suggest mining a bit higher than -61 to avoid lava.

With the latest update 1.20.4 vanilla, diamonds that are exposed to open air spawn in small veins while if you find diamonds by strip mining, you might find a bigger vein.

Suggestion: Having an Enchanted Pickaxe in Minecraft can make even smaller veins yield tons of Diamonds for you. I would highly suggest going for the Efficiency and Fortune Enchantments!

My Tips On Diamond Mining

When exploring caves and finding Diamonds in Minecraft, it’s important to be prepared for mobs. Make sure you have full armor to protect yourself. In addition to that, I highly suggest that you enchant your Sword as well as your Pickaxe, to make the most out of your mining trip

The first thing that you should craft from diamonds should be the diamond pickaxe. Using the diamond pickaxe you can mine obsidian. Obsidian is an important material in the game as it is used to craft a Nether Portal, which will lead you to the Nether where you will end up finding Ancient Debris. The Ancient Debris can then be used to make the strongest material in Minecraft known as Netherite!
