Another Resident Evil Movie Is In Development From Paul W.S. Anderson

The director of four movies in the original film series is coming back to produce another film based on the video game franchise.

Story Highlights

  • A new Resident Evil movie is in the works with Paul W.S. Anderson acting as producer.
  • This new adaptation will follow Resident Evil Zero, the prequel to the original game.
  • No other details have come out yet and this is just a rumor right now.

Resident Evil is getting the reboot treatment once again as long-time franchise director Paul W.S. Anderson is developing a new movie for the video game. The husband of Mila Jovovich (the star of the original film series) previously produced the 2021 reboot called Welcome to Raccoon City. Now, he is returning to produce this new film which will be titled Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and follow the events of a spin-off game.

As per the original report from Geek Vibes Nation, this upcoming film is going to adapt Resident Evil Zero. The 2002 title serves as a prequel to the original game and tells the story of Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen. Hence, it will be based on a spin-off and not a mainline entry like the previous Resident Evil reboot. Not many plot details have come out but the rumor does provide some info:

The Umbrella Chronicles follows STARS operative Rebecca Chambers, and former Marine Billy Coen as they venture through a train that eventually takes them to a derelict training facility. Once within the facility, they discover they are being stalked by James Marcus, co-founder of the UmbrellaCorporation and creator of the T-virus, who has managed to resurrect himself with the aid of leech test-subjects. After a confrontation, Marcus mutates into a monstrosity, but is subdued by the duo. Chambers and Coen escape as the facility self-destructs.”

We can tell from these scarce details that this new movie will stay faithful to the 2002 prequel. Even though reliable film industry leaker Daniel Richtman retweeted this report, it is only a rumor as of now. A report just last month said that a new Resident Evil movie based on the fourth game was in active development. Therefore, take this rumor with a grain of salt as nothing is certain right now.

Previously, 7 movies based on the horror game have come out along with a Netflix TV series that followed the Wesker family. With the success of new titles like Resident Evil 4, it is no surprise that Capcom is making more films based on the franchise. But, we hope that this potential 8th movie is more faithful to the source material than the original film series.
