Insomniac Was Once Developing Sunset Overdrive 2; Was Canceled In Favor Of Spider-Man

An obvious choice that disappointed many gamers.

Story Highlights

  • Sunset Overdrive 2 was once in development by Insomniac Games but was halted in favor of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
  • The decision was likely made because the first title made only a negligible amount of profit and was unsuccessful.
  • The future of the series does not look bright, as per the leaks. Insomniac does not seem to have plans for it.

The recent Insomniac Games leaks have spawned a bunch of details about its olden franchises that lay dormant among its magnum opuses. Sunset Overdrive is one such series. It was a highly beloved franchise to its loyal yet small number of fans. At one point, the studio was brewing the second iteration of the IP, but it allegedly decided to outright cancel its development in favor of what would become 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man.

As pointed out by users on Reddit and other forums, Sunset Overdrive 2 was outfavored by Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, it does not appear to be mentioned in the shared slide. The devs were at a crossroads while creating the sequel because the first title had hardly made any profits. As per one report emerging from the same leak, Sunset Overdrive had only churned out $567, which is just a tiny amount.

As per one of the leaked docs shared by Smitch on ResetEra, Sunset Overdrive rolled over just under 1.9 million copies since it came out for Xbox One in 2014. It arrived on October 28, 2014, for Xbox One, followed by a PC arrival on November 18, 2018.

The reason to give up on the Sunset Overdrive IP seems plausible. Choosing between a series that is barely making a profit over a globally famous superhero IP would not be a difficult decision for many game studios at the end of the day. Regardless, longtime fans have still hoped for Insomniac Games to return to the franchise with another title. There is no sight of another Sunset Overdrive entry in the leaks at all, however.

Insomniac Games was hit with a massive data breach because of a ransomware attack, which is the main cause behind the sudden influx of confidential data leakage. Many details about its future titles and other tidbits have come to light. Allegedly, the core of the leak confirmed that it is working on many of the Spider-Man and X-Man games over the next ten years. A Rachet and Clank title is also planned to come out roughly after half a decade.
