Xbox Game Pass Shouldn’t Stop People From Buying Games, Says Xbox CEO
"If people love to buy games, that's great; I have no issue"
Xbox Game Pass debuted back in February 2017 and has revolutionised the way people own and play games. With the release of the Xbox One consoles in 2013, certain decisions were made regarding the objectives of the company, which turned Xbox Game Studios into more of an entertainment hub than a manufacturing company. Xbox Game Pass has been one of these decisions that have brought more and more consumers to the ecosystem since.
In a recent interview conducted by CNN Underscored, Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox Game Studios, discussed the Xbox Game Pass and what the company has planned for it in the future. As such, he stated that while the company is certainly focusing on its subscription-based gaming service, it’s just one of the options for players on its platforms.
“We will have the ability for you to own games that you can stream. That’s an important consideration as well,” he stated. “I look at Game Pass as one of the options that people do on our platform. But if people love to buy games, that’s great. I have no issue,” he further explained.
Phil Spencer mentioned that, while the Xbox Game Pass is definitely something that Xbox Game Studios aims to continue for a long time, it shouldn’t really stop people from buying games if they like to. After all, Game Pass, while very economical for most players, is still a subscription-based service, and some people just like the feeling of owning games.
He further discussed that the company’s subscription-based service was a result of a team of disruptive thinkers inside the company. “[It was] a group of innovative, disruptive thinkers inside the company that wanted to go do something different and were able to make that happen,” he said. Ever since Phil Spencer has taken over Xbox Game Studios, the company has certainly gone upwards significantly and it’s because of these gambles that we’ve received features like backward compatibility and the Xbox Game Pass.
