PlayStation 5 And Xbox Series Are Battling For No.1 In UK This Year

December will be key in telling which console comes out on top as the best-selling this year in the UK.

Due to many varying factors, next-gen consoles didn’t have as fast a start as many people expected. From the long-lasting pandemic to supply issues that are just beginning to end, these new consoles had to face many hurdles. However, things are finally starting to look up for Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 going into next year.

Currently, both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are fighting with PlayStation 5 for the biggest console in the UK this year. Whichever console wins this neck-to-neck tie in December will be the best-selling hardware in the UK in 2022. Nintendo Switch is also in the picture as the 3rd main party.

Major Takeaways

  • Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 are fighting for the top spot in the UK sales chart for 2022, with Nintendo Switch also in the picture.
  • Only 20,000 units separate all three of these main consoles.
  • Next-gen consoles are showing a resurgence after a successful holiday season too.

Christopher Dring of the Games IndustryBiz first reported this via a tweet from his Twitter account. He is arguably the most reliable journalist for gaming news in the UK so his word holds weight. And, the PlayStation is currently winning according to Dring’s Tweet.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is leading both the Xbox Series consoles and the Switch right now. However, this margin is very low as the gap is only 20,000 units between the 3 main consoles right now. Therefore any one of them can take the win at the end of 2022 in the UK.

According to GameRant, this gap was 40,000 back in October. So, it has come down to half in November which means that the race between all the consoles is heating up. Christopher Dring himself has said he can’t call who will win so it is going to be close.

The performance of every one of the next-gen consoles should be appreciated after the first 2 years. Discounts on the Xbox Series S have helped the console’s sales a lot and the Microsoft console has also not had many supply problems this year. Meanwhile, the sales of first-part titles like God of War Ragnarok have given PlayStation an edge over the Xbox consoles.

In a year where Xbox has had no major first-party titles, this has played a huge part in the race. The success of God of War Ragnarok has Sony’s next-gen console in the lead even with some supply issues persisting. However, the overall outlook of the console market shows us a promising picture of the future with every next-gen hardware competing.

On the other hand, Nintendo Switch has not slowed down since its initial release in 2017. The success of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has also amplified the sales of the Nintendo handheld. So, every console is making a claim for the top spot when 2022 ends.

Across the holiday period, every console made the top 5 lists in the USA. Xbox Series X was the best-selling console on Black Friday, while Nintendo Switch made the top 5 during Thanksgiving. PlayStation 5 was also not far behind as it was the only gaming console in Cyber Monday’s top 5

So, it’s safe to say that all hardware has seen a resurgence in sales this year, especially next-gen consoles. With the Christmas holiday season still to go, these numbers are only going to increase. Hopefully, this continues into 2023 and we face no problem in obtaining next-gen consoles next year.
