Helldivers 2 Players Now Move To Fix Game’s Reputation On Steam After Sony’s U-Turn

"Like all Major Orders, this one was cleared within 48 hours."

Story Highlights

  • Helldivers 2 has seen nothing but hell over the past few days in terms of protest and negative Steam reviews.
  • Sony announcing that PSN account linking is required to play has been received harshly.
  • Today, the corporates have reversed the decision, saying this change won’t move forward.

I guess democracy really prevails at the end of the day, hunh? Three days ago, Arrowhead Game Studios, on orders of the publishing head Sony, announced that linking to your PSN account on Steam is now mandatory to play the game. In the wake of this decision, Helldivers 2 was also delisted from over 150 countries where PSN is not available, locking out thousands of players and leaving them with a brick.

Today, PlayStation has made it official that it no longer plans on moving forward with this proposed regime. The folks over at r/Helldivers are having a field day as we speak, but that’s no surprise. The community came together to speak up against a clear violation, and they ended up successful. That’s beautiful by every stretch of the word.

Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

The Plan Now Is To Rebuild

Like a good, managed democracy, the Helldivers 2 community has initiated a plan to turn their negative Steam reviews into positive, and let everyone else know that wins can be bagged if you put in enough effort.

It bears mentioning that the third-person shooter by Arrowhead garnered more than 200,000 negative Steam reviews in less than 2 days, harboring a distress call and getting Sony to reverse its decision.

Thankfully, it paid off and paid off well.
