The PS5 Slim Is Now Out In The Wild; Size Comparison Revealed

The newer PlayStation 5 is expected to start rolling out this month.

Story Highlights

  • The PlayStation 5 Slim is the upgraded model of the base PS5 console.
  • The new unit is expected to be released sometime this month and roll out globally afterward.
  • A new post shows a PS5 Slim in hand, along with a size comparison with the older model.

A little over 3 weeks ago, Sony unveiled a brand-new PlayStation 5 model, a slimmer, sleeker version of the existing PS5 console, with a 1TB SSD upgrade and a separately purchasable disk drive for its digital variant. The company said that the PS5 Slim would start rolling out in November, but before the officials could make an updated announcement on that front, the new unit appears to be out in the wild already.

As shared by Redditor u/tistick on the r/playstation subreddit, the PS5 Slim is already being sold in some stores, with one person evidently taking it home, unboxing it, and putting it side by side with the older PlayStation 5 model, which is soon to be dubbed “fat” by players across the world. It bears mentioning that both consoles in the comparison photos are physical editions.

The difference in size apparent from the photos is certainly appreciable, and those who’ve been waiting to buy a PlayStation 5 should find the Slim variant purchase-worthy, especially with the added storage capacity. On a side note, though, the consensus is mixed on the PS5 Slim, with some speaking in favor of the design and others preferring the previous model.

I’ll stick to my launch day tower of terror,” says Waughy on Reddit, commenting on the comparison. Another well-liked remark coming from u/moonshinemondays reads, “For some reason, I absolutely love the intimidating presence of my PS5.” To put things into perspective, though, the older PlayStation 5 compared in the photos has the Dbrand cover plates slapped on, rendering the comparison somewhat inaccurate.

For those who missed it, a fan took it upon himself to differentiate between the sizes of the new and old PlayStation 5 consoles back when the PS5 Slim was first unveiled, particularly due to the fact that the official reveal video was lackluster in that respect. The Redditor put the older PS5’s physical variant right beside Slim’s digital version virtually.

The company confirmed earlier that the PlayStation 5 Slim will start rolling out in November in the US, available for purchase at a number of local retailers and at PlayStation Direct as well. Starting this month, the console will be shipped across other regions subsequently. The physical variant of the PS5 Slim costs the same, but the digital edition’s cost has been raised to $449.99

Lastly, the digital edition has been made flexible enough to accommodate a specialized disk drive for those who’d want to convert it into physical later. This accessory will set users back $79.99
