A Sequel To The Uncharted Movie Could “Definitely” Happen, Says Producer

In a new interview with Hollywood Reporter, the producer of the Uncharted live-action movie has confirmed that Sony is definitely looking to make a sequel for the 2022 action film. Charles Roven, who also produced last month’s box office hit Oppenheimer, told the publication that he had a good time making Uncharted, and fans across the world liked it, hence making a sequel very likely and making it a movie franchise.

Roven didn’t give The Hollywood Reporter a clear answer, but he did say that at this point, he and Sony are definitely looking to make another one. The producer also went on to praise the film, saying the people who haven’t played the game and those who have, liked the uncharted movie and the overall reception was positive. Therefore, even though a sequel isn’t confirmed yet, it’s very likely we’ll see Tom Holland return as Nathan Drake

Q: Is there still a desire to continue Uncharted after an impressive box office run, especially for the time in which it was released?

Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.”

Out of all the video game adaptations we have seen in the past few decades, Uncharted has probably had the most tumultuous development. The movie started production way back in 2008 when Avi Arad started working with a division of Sony to develop a movie based on the Naughty Dog title. And, since that year it has had more directors and writers hired to make it than the fingers on your hands.

Travis Knight, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Neil Burger, and David O Russell are just some of the names that were hired to direct the live-action Uncharted film across its decade-long development process. To give you some context about how long the movie’s pre-production was, Mark Wahlberg, who plays Sam in the adaptation, was originally hired to portray Nathan Drake.

After almost a dozen creatives dropped out, Sony finally hired Venom director Ruben Fleischer to make Uncharted, with Tom Holland starring as a young version of Nathan Drake. However, the film’s roadblocks didn’t end there as the COVID-19 pandemic postponed its release by almost two years and halted filming for several months in 2020.

Uncharted was first supposed to come out on December 18, 2020, but the pandemic pushed its release to February 2022. But, when it did finally hit the theaters, it was a big success for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The film was a box office success, earning over $400 million on a production budget of $120,000,000, more than tripling its value during the theatrical run.

The reviews from critics were mixed with many calling the final product rather underwhelming. On the contrary, however, audience reception was more on the positive side with uncharted receiving a pretty amazing 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. As Charles Roven says himself, both fans of the game and those who haven’t even touched it loved the Tom Holland-led movie

hopefully, we hear something more concrete regarding Uncharted 2 sooner rather than later, and maybe even get a hint about the new game in the franchise.
