On the 24th of February 2022, Russia officially invaded Ukraine with the largest military attack since World War 2 in Europe. Since then, the world has been taken up by a storm, and people everywhere want to help Ukraine. Among them are the Ukraine-based GSC Game World developers, who are working on the highly anticipated game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. The developer team even posted a tweet along with an account number on its Twitter account, asking to help Ukraine financially.
Today on Steam, the GSC Game World developers changed the subheading of their upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 from Heart of “Chernobyl” to “Chornobyl.” The difference in the subheading is swapping the ‘e’ with an ‘o.’ At first glance, it’s hard to tell what it signifies, and it seems like it’s not such a big deal. However, the change in the subheading symbolises Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union.
On the 28th of October 1944, Ukraine, as we know it, was liberated and got independence as a separate country. Before that, the country was known as “The Ukraine,” which symbolised that the country was a part of something. Calling the country with its old name is incorrect and sensitive to the ongoing war. So, including “the” with Ukraine implies that the country is a part of the Soviet Union.
The former subheading for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, Chernobyl, was spelt in Russian, but the current one, Chornobyl, is in the Ukrainian language. The old name of the game is still there to see in some parts, like the poster on Steam. But, it is changed from most places, including the game’s description. As of now, there has been no official announcement made from the GSC Game World regarding the change. However, it is likely due to the ongoing crisis that they decided to change the subtitle to support the cause of Ukraine.
