Before seeking out Ansur, make sure your party is well-prepared, as Ansur will show no mercy. When you feel ready, search below Baldur’s Gate to find the lair of Ansur. You will need to defeat the formidable dragon in combat to progress The Blade of Frontier’s quest. In rewards, you’ll get the Helm of Balduran and Balduran’s Giantslayer!
Dragon Ansur Location

The legendary dragon Ansur can be defeated in BG3, but only after completing key preliminary tasks. First, you must solve the puzzle presented in the Legend of Ansur book, which provides clues to unlocking the dragon’s sanctum. Additionally, you need to clear all the puzzle challenges located throughout Wyrmway Dungeon.
These consist of the puzzles in the Chamber of Justice, Chamber of Insight, Chamber of Strategy, and Chamber of Courage. Solving each puzzle will grant access to the next challenge. Once you have completed all of these trials, travel to the Dragon’s Sanctum chamber to confront Ansur.
Here’s how you can locate Ansur by following these steps:
- To find Dragon Ansur, you must access the Dragon’s Sanctum located past The Wyrmway underneath Wyrm’s Rock.
- Gaining entry can be difficult if you have already saved Duke Ravengard, as it will turn the entire Wyrm’s Rock fortress hostile.
- The best path is to enter Wyrm’s Rock from the open south gate and carefully jump across ledges on the cliff face to reach a beach below.
- Here you’ll find a pipe that can transport you directly to The Wyrmway, allowing access to the Sanctum.
- However, you’ll need the “Gaseous Form” spell in order to use the pipe.
- If you haven’t saved Ravengard yet, you can also reach The Wyrmway through the prison in the northwest corner of Wyrm’s Rock by entering the Iron Gates.
- Either way, traversing The Wyrmway is the only way to finally reach the Dragon’s Sanctum, where Ansur lurks.
Proper preparations and clever use of spells like “Gaseous Form” are key to finding and reaching Ansur.
How To Beat Ansur

Ansur has a massive health pool of 400 hit points and is at level 17, indicating his formidable strength. Joining Ansur are arrays of water-based enemies such as myrmidons and elementals. Ansur is a formidable foe that will test your party’s skills and preparation. Defeating Ansur is easier said than done!
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you Beat Ansur:
- Battling the dragon Ansur is a major undertaking that requires careful preparation and strategy.
- When the fight begins, Ansur will be supported by two dangerous Water Myrmidons.
- Focus fire to take these out quickly before concentrating attacks on Ansur.
- Use ranged and area-of-effect attacks rather than close melee combat to avoid its opportunity attacks.
- Ansur will gather power for its devastating Stormheart Nova, signaling with a hover.
- When Stormheart Nova happens, cast Globe of Invulnerability to protect the party from the incoming blast.
- Bring a wizard-like Gale for crowd control spells to stun Ansur, interrupting the gathering power and earning the “Crash Landing” achievement.
- Position party members widely around the arena to minimize lightning strikes.
- Dispel any electrical charges Ansur absorbs to prevent strengthening its strikes.
With persistence and the right spells, Ansur will finally fall after a grueling battle.

Some Pro Tips Against The Boss

Personally, the below tips helped me in beating Ansur BG3:
- Have a party with a high-damage melee character like a Barbarian.
- And Cleric for healing/support like Shadowheart.
- A Ranger for extra damage like Astarion, and a Wizard like Gale for control spells.
- Use potions of lightning resistance on melee characters to resist Ansur’s lightning damage.
- Summon creatures like the Deva to draw aggro away from the party since they can retaliate with a breath weapon.
- Position squishy characters like Gale carefully to avoid getting hit by Ansur’s knockback and fly attacks.
- Use Gale’s Globe of Invulnerability to make the party immune to damage during Ansur’s big attacks, and thus, position it carefully so Ansur can’t benefit from it.
- Use Gale’s Telekinesis to throw the additional enemies that spawn into the abyss at the start.
- Use Shadowheart’s Aid spell to give everyone extra health.
- Rage with the Barbarian for damage reduction, as Magic is less effective on Ansur.
- Save spell slots for emergency healing and control spells.
- Attack Ansur during its damage resistance phase to avoid attacks.

Helm Of Balduran

At the start of each of your turns, the helm magically heals you for 2 hit points, keeping you standing strong even against repeated blows. The helm also protects your mind from stunning effects – you are immune to any spells or attacks that could stun you while wearing Balduran’s helm.
How To Get Crash Landing Achievement

There is a hidden feat that can be accomplished during the battle with Ansur – knocking him out of the sky mid-flight. To accomplish Crash Landing Achievement, you must time a crowd control (CC) effect to hit the dragon precisely when he begins Gathering Power for his Discharging Nova attack.
- Skills that can potentially stun or immobilize the undead creature include Banish, Turning the Undead, Mind Blast with Illithid Power, and many others.
- The optimal time to use your CC is when Ansur enters the “channeling power” phase as he prepares to unleash Discharging Nova.
- He will enter the “channeling power” phase several times during the fight.
