Destiny 2 Dethrones Sons of the Forest As Steam’s Best-Seller Following Lightfall’s Launch

Destiny 2 has recently seen the launch of the Lightfall DLC, which has propelled it to climb the sales charts on Steam. The free-to-play shooter has recently become the best-selling game on the Steam storefront currently, as noted by the official top sellers list provided by the largest PC gaming store.

The stellar title has seen a new wave in sales due to the new DLC, which has helped dethrone the former top seller, Sons of the Forest, which was the talk of the town in the entire gaming community after its eventful launch. It has also surpassed some critically acclaimed giants and recent releases soon after the DLC came out. 

Destiny 2 has also currently overshadowed all of the goliaths on the Steam store. Free and paid renditions, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Atomic Heart, Hogwarts Legacy, and Apex Legends, have also been left behind by the prominent action role-playing first-person shooter.

Bungie‘s multiplayer project started selling in bulk because of the new DLC, causing an inpour of veteran and new players into the game.

The indie survival horror Sons of the Forest is also highly successful for an early access release, barely losing the edge in contrast to the established community of Destiny 2. To elaborate on its sheer triumph, the heart-wrenching yet fun island venture rolled over 2 million copies within a single day after its early access launch.

The concurrent player bases of both these entries also speak volumes, surpassing hundreds of thousands of players at any given moment. As caught by the Steam tracking site, SteamDB, Destiny 2 recently surpassed its own all-time peak set back in 2019 upon launch, reaching over 316,750 active players 18 hours ago.

The Twitch viewers also nearly spiked near the 200,000 mark, which is a significant increase as opposed to the last few months.

Sons of the Forest’s release also opened the dam gates to over 300,000 users, and the active player base has only grown over time. The cannibal-infested islands recently saw exactly 414,257 users venturing out together, as it broke over its old all-time peak. Additionally, nearly 200,000 players are currently holding out against the horrors.

The new endeavor by Endnight Games Ltd also proved to be a sensational hit among streamers, seeing a peak of over 777,000 Twitch viewers enjoying the experience with their favorite streamers. 

The Lightfall DLC has led to Destiny 2 undergoing another golden period after its launch; it has proven to be among the most successful DLC releases. Lightfall deeply expands upon the Destiny 2 universe and brings a slew of new features and overhauls, serving as a perfect treat for the highly active community.

The DLC is planned to receive a new free-roam world, a new raid, and two new dungeons. While the main title is free, the standard edition of the DLC, featuring access to Season 20, will drain your pockets out of $29.99. However, the DLC reviews, at the time of writing, are “mixed” on the Steam store at the moment.

All in all, Destiny 2: Lightfall has breathed a new life into the already flourishing entry, proving its acclaim among the other free-to-play FPS rivals in the process. We can expect it to increase the total active players and lead to the development of other DLCs in the future if it leads to a steady incline over time in all the charts.
