Immortals Fenyx Rising Sequel Is Like Spin-Off, Suggests Industry Insider

We can never have enough fantasy in different forms of media. People love reading books, watching movies, and playing games based on stories of fantasy. Video games have a special ability in bringing this genre to life with games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, God of War, and The Legend of Zelda franchise.

The former two are especially popular for their influence on video games and adapting old mythos. Ubisoft released a game in 2020 which was kind of a combination of God of War and The Legend of Zelda franchise. This game was Immortals Fenyx Rising and it featured Greek gods while being very similar to The Legend of Zelda games. 

Ubisoft’s new franchise got critical acclaim and was a success with respect to sales as well. The company was very happy with its numbers and it became a hit on the Nintendo Switch. Recently, a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising was announced to be in the works and it will be a bit different.

Immortals Fenyx Rising’s sequel will not be a proper sequel but more of a spin-off in a new direction. An accredited industry insider, Jeff Grubb, broke this news while talking on his Game Mess Decides podcast this week. According to him, this spin-off/sequel will be a soft reboot of the first game.

Ubisoft is going to visually reboot the sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising, so it will be different. This new visual direction is due to the criticism that the game got for being too similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Hence, Ubisoft wants to make the next game in the series less of a copy. 

Jeff Grub tells us that the sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising has the production code name “Oxygen”. In typical Ubisoft fashion, you can play as a male or female character. Like the first game, the sequel will be based on mythology but it’s not Greek mythos this time around.

Hawaiian Polynesian culture is going to be the basis of Immortals Fenyx Rising’s sequel; a God from the cultural myths will narrate the sequel, just like the first game. Hence, it will follow a formula similar to the original, just with different visuals and mythos.

Like Immortals Fenyx Rising, the sequel is going to be visually stylized and is already in pre-production. However, it is not going to release any time soon, as the rumored release date is around 2025. Even though that is kind of a bummer, we can’t wait until this game finally releases.
