Insomniac Dev Expands On Spider-Man 2’s Protagonist Choices

"I love Tony Stark, but it's hard to identify with a billionaire, right?"

Story Highlights

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the sequel to the 2018-released Marvel’s Spider-Man, has remained one of the biggest releases of 2023, featuring both Spider-Men in action.
  • Speaking in an interview, the Creative Director of Spider-Man 2 has said how the studio wanted the choice of protagonists to be between people who related to each other on a personal level.
  • Fitting the bill perfectly, both Peter Parker and Miles Morales share multiple similarities, and therefore, are able to work with each other so well because of this reason.

What do Miles Morales and Peter Parker have in common? Let’s see. Spidey powers at a young age? Check. Familial issues? Check. High intellect but struggle with socializing? Also check. Insomniac Studios — the famed developer behind the Marvel’s Spider-Man games — is of the opinion that the reason that the two Spider-Men work well together is because their personal lives are relatable to each other.

And in my opinion, that’s a brilliant choice of protagonists to go with. Bryan Intihar, the Creative Director at Insomniac Games, has spoken up about this particular facet of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, explaining how the choice of the protagonists came to be. Relating the two Spider-Men to each other on a personal level, Bryan says, “I love Tony Stark, but it’s hard to identify with a billionaire, right?”

And that’s pretty much self-explanatory, not any lesser than the follow-up statement coming from the Creative Directory, saying, “And look at Thor. Great hero, but it’s hard to identify with a god.” Well, you’re not wrong. Most of us do find trouble blending in with folks who are leagues above our own—that’s not anything new.

But in the case of the two Spider-Men in question, Peter’s got some history — as we’re all aware — and so does Miles, losing his father at a young age, particularly during the events of the first game. It’s great to see that Insomniac is truly out there trying to make the game’s characters resonate with the players as to form a synergetic bond that’s deeply understandable on both ends.

In other news, Bryan Intihar also voiced his opinion on the concerns of those saying Spider-Man 2 should cost less because it’s a relatively short game. The Creative Director affirms that the experience here is nothing but worth it, and that the studio prioritizes quality above all other metrics, thus the choice to keep the play length somewhere around 15 hours rather than pushing those figures way up.

I feel confident in saying that it’s worth it. For us, it really comes down to the experience we want to deliver with the quality we want to hit. Obviously, there’s a certain level of, ‘hey, someone’s going to spend this much money on a game,’ so we want to give them the experience that’s worth it. Our job is to make sure that you feel no matter how long it is, it’s worth that money, it’s worth that investment.”
