More Screenshots Of Rockstar’s Canceled “Agent” Have Surfaced

It's been also revealed that Agent's in-game codename is Jimmy.

Story Highlights

  • Agent by Rockstar Games is an abandoned project that was once planned to be released for the PS3.
  • In the wake of the massive GTA 5 leak that’s been going around, screenshots of Agent have surfaced.
  • The screenshots show an underwater level in the game, along with a closer look at the protagonist.

A little over two days ago, an anonymous source leaked GTA 5’s source code and pertinent Bully 2 files, putting Rockstar in turmoil just like last year. As more and more data is pushed out in the open, the internet seems to be getting in on confidential company information, such as additional Agent screenshots that showcase the once-live project’s underwater level.

One image that was uploaded to the photo-sharing website ImgBB shows a series of screenshots detailing a level in Rockstar’s Agent that appears to be set underwater. There’s even a shot in there that shows the protagonist from a gameplay-oriented third-person perspective, along with the in-game map in the bottom-left corner—something that many Rockstar titles replicate.

The other image found on the platform shows off game files and resources meant to be utilized for Agent’s development. Mentions of “Prop Tree Olive,” “Prop Tree Pine,” and “Prop Tree Cedar” are apparent, not to mention other data that points to in-game environment files. The gameplay photos are evidently from a very early build of the game, likely from right before the project’s cancelation.

For those not in the know, Rockstar’s Agent was first announced back in 2009, when Rockstar supremo Sam Houser formally declared, “We have always enjoyed making action games, and with Agent we are making what we believe will be the ultimate action game.” Fast-forward some years later, there was complete silence on the spy game project, with no official putting out any statement regarding Agent’s development.

As per a detailed feature by Polygon, however, it was uncovered that the abandonment mainly came from the shift in resources that were in favor of Grand Theft Auto 5—Rockstar’s then-blockbuster that the company was looking to push through with at all costs. The studio working on Agent, Rockstar San Diego, was re-assigned to work on GTA 5, therefore, leaving Agent in the dust in the process of doing so.

In other news, information on more canceled Rockstar projects has started to surface as well, including Midnight Club 5 and GTA Tokyo. The situation has gotten even uglier since, now that the alleged hacker is threatening to spill the beans on GTA 6 as well, as per a recent post on X. It’s astonishing how the giants of the industry can be so vulnerable too at times, including Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games that has also been hit with ransomware as of late.

Outside of all this debacle, Rockstar is plotting to push out GTA 6 at full force, the newest and highly anticipated installment in the iconic Grand Theft Auto franchise. The developer released the title’s first teaser trailer earlier this month, showcasing the dual-protagonist nature of the open-world action-adventure, along with a number of other aspects that have us going until another reveal trailer.

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been given a release window of 2025 for the Xbox Series X|S and PC, with no PC port seemingly planned for now.
