Obsidian Entertainment Is Developing An Unannounced Title In Unity

The studio is hiring for Unity Gameplay Programmer to work on the third entry.

Story Highlights

  • Obsidian Entertainment is reportedly developing an unannounced project alongside Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, as per a new job listing.
  • The studio is hiring a Unity Gameplay Programmer in a new contractual listing. The other two games utilize Unreal Engine 5 instead.
  • The new unannounced project is expected to be smaller in scale due to the limited-time nature of the ad. Unity engine is also often used for smaller titles.
  • No other details for the unannounced project exist for now, and the studio has not officially revealed it.

Update: The concerned job listing has since been deleted.

The popular RPG enthusiasts at Obsidian Entertainment are seemingly hiring for an unannounced project currently in the brewer, which is different from the other known entries, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. This new unannounced project is fully covered in mystery, but some tangible proof suggests it is separate from the aforesaid games. It will use the Unity engine instead of Unreal Engine 5, like the known titles in development.

As per a new job listing hiring for a Unity Gameplay Programmer, the unnamed project will utilize the Unity engine; the new listing has also sparked fables among the fans, leading many to think that a new unannounced project is progressing alongside the other two awaited entries. The new Senior Unity dev will be hired at the California-based studio to work on the new project. However, no further details have been disclosed regarding it.

Obsidian is looking for an experienced Unity Programmer to join our team of talented RPG developers.

Our ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, the ability to deliver on time, and outstanding problem-solving skills. If you are a Unity aficionado who is passionate about creating rich and compelling player experiences, this role may be a perfect fit for you.”

However, the new unannounced entry is likely not AAA-scaled like Obsidian Entertainment’s other titles in the brewer. The nature of the Unity engine suggests that the game will be developed on a smaller scale. On another note, the job listing is strictly contractual, as listed explicitly in the title, which also alludes to the fact that the game might be a smaller project.

This omits many possible AAA sequels that many gamers thought could be secretly in development. In other words, no Fallout sequel is currently being crafted by Obsidian Entertainment developers. It has helmed five Unity-based games in the past, with the most popular franchise being The Pillars of Eternity. Its recent success, Pentiment, also proved quite popular among some fans despite being a small project.

The renowned RPG developers are also working heavily on Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. While no exact release date is known for the former first-person RPG, it may arrive in the latter half of this year or the start of the next year. Avowed also went through an internal reboot earlier in development that improved its quality by a mile, as said by an insider. Moreover, it is expected to release earlier than The Outer Worlds 2, as per rumors.

The Outer Worlds 2 is the upcoming sequel to the first installment, which is a single-player dystopian sci-fi RPG. It is rumored to be an Xbox exclusive since the giant conglomerate acquired Obsidian Entertainment in 2018. The studio recently auditioned for “Major NPC” roles for the title.

Knowing the nature of the studio, we may see this new unannounced project arriving on multiple devices. Alongside Xbox Series S and Series X, we could also see its leeway into PC. Moreover, it is possible to support the last-gen Xbox One because of its possible smaller scale, but we suggest taking it with a grain of salt.
