Story Highlights
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the best video game releases of 2023, succeeding the first iteration.
- The game, despite its strengths and pros, will not get DLC, period. Insomniac confirmed in an earlier report.
- The new PS5 Pro Enhanced trailer for Spider-Man 2 leaves an expansion to be heavily desired.
So, PlayStation just put out this fancy-looking trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2—the 2023-launched masterclass in action-adventure and open-world games that’s just teeming with quality. I mean, it looks great, the reflections are nice and all, and the bit about being able to fire up the title at 60 FPS while the visuals are maxed out is fairly impressive.
But in the grand scheme of things, is this what us Spider-Man fans really want? The answer is no.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been stripped off its grand potential, period. Following a recent confirmation by Insomniac Games itself, we now know that the game will get no DLC, expansions, or anything of the sort. But oh yes, you can count on more costumes for the Spider-Men here and there, since Insomniac is pulling those in no short supply.
“While we have no additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re delighted to bring all of our previously released post-launch content to the PC version, including New Game+, new suits and color variants, Photo Mode features, and more,” said Insomniac’s Community Manager.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 And The Untapped Potential
Despite the title rolling over more than 10 million units to date, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has failed to give fans what they truly wanted. What’s that, you may ask?
In simple terms, that’s a compelling story. The game has its moments where it shines through and through, but there’s no doubting the fact that Insomniac played it too safe with Spider-Man 2’s plot and writing. Being the big, bad sequel to an already high-class open-world title, expectations were a little more far-fetched than what fans ended up actually getting out of the title.
Among other concerns, Spider-Man 2 takes a considerable nosedive with the pacing of its story. At one moment, everything’s coming together nicely, but after the bout of Kraven and Venom, things come to a close super fast.”
Subsequently, there’s a reason the game couldn’t take home a single distinction at The Game Awards last year. I’ll let you be the judge of what that is. In lieu of Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom grabbed the award for the best action-adventure game of the preceding year.
Now the sad part is, a lot was in motion already for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as far as that prized DLC goes, including an expansion that would see an underrated Spider-Man villain returning to the big screen, but alas! None of it really went anywhere.
All of us had it in mind that any potential DLC would remedy the qualms players had with Spider-Man 2’s base story, redeeming the entire thing in a sense. But guess what? Those prospects got cut down fast and hard, leaving us with merely hopes of an improved sequel.
The Insomniac Ransomware Tragedy
In December 2023, Insomniac Games was hit with debilitating ransomware, the type that rendered a sizable portion of confidential information pertaining to the studio open to public eyes. Not only was this a serious threat to the integrity of the developer itself, but the hackers managed to dump online substantial proof of several different Insomniac projects under the works.
This clearly led to a shift of plans over at Insomniac, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the alleged Spider-Man 2 DLCs. No man, that wasn’t how things were supposed to pan out.

Other interesting leaks in the wake of the hack followed as well, such as plans for a Silk spin-off title, but that’s not what players anticipated the most. The fact that we will now have to wait for another Spider-Man game instead irks me to my core, as it should to every passionate Insomniac fan out there.
What Insomniac Could Be Cooking Up Next
With all the doom and gloom side, I’m willing to wager my chances on the development of Marvel’s Venom next, aside from the Wolverine project, of course, that Insomniac Games is cooking up next. Although both of these titles have had no official release dates pushed out so far, the news seems around the corner.
As per leaks, Marvel’s Venom will cost about $49.99, and will probably be in the same vein as Spider-Man: Miles Morales. One of the other things that tell me that this project is indeed real and coming is how only 10% of recorded Venom dialogue has been utilized in Spider-Man 2. Where did the rest go? You tell me. Have a look at this developer slide and you’ll know what I’m on about.
Lastly, an early Spider-Man 3 prototype was discovered as well that pretty much gives away how Insomniac has a bit too much on its plate at the moment. However all of its projects unfold now, and when, is anyone’s guess, really. We’re all just hoping for Insomniac to learn from the shortcomings of Spider-Man 2 and hopefully make the sequel reflect that.
