Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Celebrate 20 Million Players, Finally

Cyberpunk's developers took to Twitter to announce their achievement while thanking the players for their support.

Cyberpunk 2077 has much to thank the recent Edgerunners update and Netflix adaptation for. The Netflix animated show titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was recently released and critically acclaimed by not only the fans of the game but general watchers as well.

Cyberpunk has since then continued to rise and now it has quite an achievement under its belt. CD Projekt RED has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has managed to sell over 20 million copies.

Major Takeaways:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 has had a resurgence ever since the Edgerunners anime and update.
  • It crossed Witcher 3’s all-time concurrent players peak count.
  • It has now managed to sell 20 million copies.

This was announced on the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account. While CD Projekt RED’s other revenue powerhouse, the critically acclaimed RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sits at a staggering 40 million+ copies sold, Cyberpunk’s achievement is quite remarkable still.

This is because the game was a buggy mess at launch and garnered quite a negative reputation at launch. Moreover, its been only almost 2 years since the game launched and its DLC expansion hasn’t even arrived yet.

Witcher 3 on the other hand was acclaimed on launch, had two equally well-received DLC expansions, and its been more than 7 years since the game was released in 2015. In just 2 years, despite the many factors weighing against it, Cyberpunk has managed to sell half as many copies.

Its recent success can be attributed to many factors. Indubitably, the success of the Edgerunners Netflix show drove old fans back to the game to check for the new Edgerunners content and enticed those who watched the show to buy the game.

Upon release, the series was critically acclaimed and this may have caught the eyes of players who may have not played the game previously.

Couple that with the fact that Cyberpunk was on sale at that time and a new enticing DLC was announced, it would be no surprise to think that it really has achieved this.

From the makers of the widely critically acclaimed Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red has crafted the world of Cyberpunk 2077, which can be massive and overwhelming at times. The game boasts a sprawling open-world chock-full of Gigs to do, the best weapons to acquire, and many bizarre NPCs to meet along the way.

However, not everything was smooth sailing for the game. It was first announced in 2012 and teased in 2013, but no information was revealed for years.

This was likely due to the developer CD Projekt Red being involved heavily in developing Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first and then its extensive DLC expansions Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine.

Afterwards, the developer turned its attention back to Cyberpunk, but the game had a rocky launch. Though the game was lauded for its gameplay, it was rife with bugs and other issues including running very badly on older gen consoles, that lead to much derision from fans.

But now, the game seems to be back on track and is showing no signs of slowing down. We sincerely hope that the game becomes able to stand toe-to-toe with the gaming industry’s giants because, despite the fact that it had its problems, it really is quite an amazing game.
