Insomniac Pays Homage To Deceased Developer In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Craig Goodman was a Technical Artist at Insomniac Games who passed away in 2019.

Story Highlights

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has delivered on expectations, becoming the highest-rated Spider-Man game to date and amassing positive reception from around the world.
  • A new post shows a mural of a person somewhere in the Spider-Man 2 in-game world, accompanied by flowers and a Spider-Man figure.
  • This mural pays tribute to Craig Goodman, an Insomniac Games developer working on the title who died fighting cancer in 2019.

In a now-deleted post on Reddit, a player shared a photo of a mural from somewhere in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, inquiring whether the man in the painting is a prominent personality. Turns out, Insomniac Games has paid tribute to the late Craig Goodman—a Technical Artist at Insomniac who worked on the first game in the series but passed on while battling cancer, sadly.

The mural is left embellished with flowers and a Spider-Man figure, commemorating the developer for his invaluable work on Insomniac’s Ratchet and Clank, Song of the Deep, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, among other titles. Honoring Craig, the studio made a blog post back in 2019, remembering and talking about him in a heartfelt fashion.

Craig brought an unstoppable energy to everything he did. You could literally feel the excitement pouring off of him as he tackled challenges that most people felt were impossible to solve. He essentially created the role of the technical artist here at Insomniac given both his extraordinary artistic and technical skills. Moreover, he was incredibly selfless, always putting everyone else first even when he was in the last stages of battling cancer.”

What’s more, is that Craig isn’t the only person who got paid homage in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The open-world action-adventure does the same for Chadwick Boseman, an extremely well-reputed actor who played the role of Black Panther in Marvel’s extended movie franchises. Taking inspiration from the actor’s success with his movie “42,” Insomniac named 42nd Street to Boseman Way in the title.

Furthermore, if you head over to the Wakandan Embassy as Miles, the webhead will make an X with his arms if you interact with the door, performing the Wakandan salute. This reminds me of a quote by T’Challa in the movie Captain America: Civil War. Who knew Chadwick’s words would apply to himself not long after?

In my culture, death is not the end. It’s more of a stepping-off point. You reach out with both hands to Bast and Sekhment, and they lead you into a green veld where you can run forever.”

In other news, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has succeeded in hitting home in a triumphant manner, becoming the best-rated Spider-Man game to exist up until now. It’s loaded with accessibility features, such as a toggle for enabling fall damage, combat speed adjustment, and an automatic puzzle skip feature to sail through those boring sequences whenever you have to.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on October 20, 2023, for the PlayStation 5 exclusively, serving as the direct sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. In our review, Usama gave the game a 4/5, citing its gripping combat, striking visuals, and great quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor as some of the title’s biggest selling points.
