Diablo 4: How To Do Nightmare Dungeons & Sigils

Nightmare Dungeons is an endgame action in Diablo 4. Nightmare Dungeons are distinguished by their increased difficulties and unique mechanics, such as Dungeon Affixes, which introduce a variety of modifiers that can alter enemy behavior, player attributes, environmental factors, and objectives. 

How To Complete Nightmare Dungeons In Diablo 4?

In Diablo 4, the Nightmare Dungeons and Nightmare Sigils become accessible as endgame activities after you’ve successfully cleared the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon. Also, you’ll need to switch to World Tier 3: Nightmare to further engage with this mechanic.

Requirements 

To participate in Nightmare Sigils and Nightmare Dungeons in Diablo 4, there are some specific requirements that you must meet:

• Complete the Main Campaign: Nightmare Dungeons are endgame content, requiring completion of the main storyline.
• Unlock World Tier 3 – Nightmare: Achieve World Tier 3, known as “Nightmare,” by successfully completing earlier tiers.
• Character Level and Gear: Ensure your character is at or close to max level with well-optimized gear for the challenging dungeons.
• Location: Complete the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon to gain access to Nightmare Dungeons.
• Have a Nightmare Sigil: Obtain Nightmare Sigils through various endgame activities in World Tier 3

Once you’ve met these requirements, you can start using Nightmare Sigils and entering Nightmare Dungeons. Just remember to be prepared – these dungeons are a significant step up in difficulty from the regular content in Diablo 4.

Nightmare Sigil In Diablo 4 

While playing on World Tier 3, your loot drops may occasionally include Nightmare Sigils. This can happen while you’re participating in various activities such as Whispers of the Dead bounties, Helltide Events, exploring in free roam, and even while you’re inside other Nightmare Dungeons. From my experience, the drops are random, so obtaining a Nightmare Sigil will require some luck with RNG.

• In addition to loot drops, Nightmare Sigils can also be acquired from the Tree of Whisper‘s reward caches, world bosses like Ashava, and occasionally from defeated monsters.
• The Occultist also provides a crafting option for Nightmare Sigils.

What To Do After Obtaining Nightmare Sigil?

After you have a Diablo 4 Nightmare Sigil and you’re ready to activate it, go to the dungeon that corresponds with the name on the Sigil (for example, if you have the Blind Burrows Nightmare Sigil, you would need to go to the Blind Burrows dungeon).

• Use the Sigil to transform the standard dungeon into its Nightmare version.
• If you use a new Sigil, it will take precedence over your current Nightmare Dungeon.

After activating a Nightmare Dungeon: You will need to navigate to the marked location on your map and manually enter the dungeon to begin the Nightmare Dungeon run. These Nightmare Dungeons presented me with enhanced challenges due to their additional modifiers or affixes, which can adjust the dungeon’s difficulty.

What To Expect In A Nightmare Dungeon?

• Group Size: Solo or group play is possible, with difficulty increasing based on group size.
• Dungeon Affixes: Unique modifiers in each Nightmare Dungeon alter rules and enemy behavior.
• Elite Enemies: Stronger and tougher elite foes populate Nightmare Dungeons.
• Resource Management: Properly manage health, mana, and consumables for the longer and intense dungeons.
• Boss Fights: Each dungeon concludes with a challenging boss fight, testing player skills and resource management.

Nightmare Dungeon Modifiers In Diablo 4

Nightmare Dungeons in Diablo 4 feature a unique system of modifiers, known as Dungeon Affixes. These affixes can dramatically change the way a dungeon is approached and tackled, making each run a unique challenge. They can affect enemy behavior, modify the dungeon layout, or introduce new objectives.

Here’s my breakdown of how these Dungeon Affixes could potentially work, but keep in mind the specifics might be different based on the actual game:

1. Enemy Affixes: These affect the behavior or attributes of the monsters in the dungeon.
2. For instance, an enemy affix might make monsters explode upon death, leave damaging areas on the ground, or become immune to certain types of damage.
3. Player Affixes:  You might find your character’s speed increased but health decreased, or perhaps your spells might have increased cooldown but also increased power.
4. Environmental Affixes: These affixes affect the dungeon environment. It could alter the layout of the dungeon, spawn additional obstacles, or introduce environmental hazards like damaging ground effects or falling debris.
5. Objective Affixes: These affixes introduce new objectives or change the existing ones.
6. You might have to complete the dungeon within a time limit, or without dying, or find and kill a particular mini-boss in the dungeon.

Each Nightmare Dungeon run will have a random selection of these affixes, making every run a new challenge. This also encourages different strategies and builds, as some strategies might work better with certain affixes than others.

Dungeon Rewards

In Diablo 4, one of the potential rewards for completing Nightmare Dungeons is Paragon Glyphs. These are powerful enhancements that can be used to further augment and customize your character’s abilities. Think of them as highly specialized skill points, adding a new layer of depth to the character’s progression and customization systems. Here’s how I think they work based on typical RPG mechanics and previous Diablo games:

1. Acquiring Paragon Glyphs: Paragon Glyphs are primarily earned by completing Nightmare Dungeons, though there might be other ways to earn them.
   • They are usually rewarded upon successfully finishing the dungeon, and the quality and quantity of the Glyphs may be influenced by the difficulty level of the dungeon, the speed of completion, and other factors.
2. Using Paragon Glyphs: Once acquired, Paragon Glyphs can be spent to augment your character’s skills and abilities.
   • For instance, you might be able to use a Glyph to add a stunning effect to one of your attacks, increase the range of a spell, or boost the healing effect of a skill.

Customization Of Paragon Glyphs

Paragon Glyphs offer a significant level of customization and progression. They can be used to tailor your character to your specific playstyle, creating unique builds that match how you want to play.

• Want to be a tanky warrior who can heal themselves in the heat of battle? Use your Glyphs to boost your defensive skills and self-healing abilities.
• Prefer to be a glass cannon that can unleash devastating attacks? Spend your Glyphs on boosting your damage output.
• The specifics of how these Glyphs work will depend on your character class and the skills you have unlocked.

Remember that using Paragon Glyphs effectively will likely require a good understanding of your character class and your skills.
