Horizon Forbidden West Black Box Locations
To get your hands on the Black Boxes in Horizon Forbidden West, you will first need to go to the Memorial Grove and look around for an NPC called Untalla. This is the NPC who will tell you everything there is about the Black Boxes and how she will reward you with unique items if you bring her to them.
After the conversation ends, the hunt for the Black Boxes will begin. If there is a Black Box nearby, Aloy will also pick up its signal. This will only happen after you have a conversation with Untalla. Otherwise, you won’t be able to pick up the signals.
Before beginning the search, it is recommended that you first complete The Sea of Sands and Seeds of the Past quest, which are the 11th and 12th story quests of the game, respectively. This is because these quests will unlock the infinite breathability and the Vine Cutter, two items that you’ll need to get some of Horizon Forbidden West Black Boxes. It is a must that you get them as it will be impossible to acquire some of the Black Boxes without them.
- You learn about the Black Boxes from an NPC named Untalla. You are supposed to collect them and bring them to her in exchange for the Wings of the Ten Weapon.

The Memorial Grave, you will see a bridge. While crossing it, you will be able to see a plane wreck on the left side.
No Man’s Land
The first Black Box is located in No Man’s Land, which is south of Plainsong. You need to visit the location seen in the image below by simply fast traveling there are run on foot. There, you will see a crashed plane on the top of the hill, and you will need to make your way to the top from the south side. Then, you will need to use the spear to open the door, after which you’ll be able to find the Black Box on the floor.

The Whitewatch Peaks
This one is high up in the mountains, so make sure you’re prepared for some climbing. After reaching the location mentioned in the image below, you will need to make your way to the top of the mountain by using the ledges.

After you reach the top, you’ll come across some rubble. There are going to be two boxes that you will need to use the pullcaster on to clear the wreckage. The first box is on the left side, and the second box is on the right side. After you successfully pull the rubble away, you’ll be able to see the Black Box.

Jagged Deep
Unlike the above two Black Boxes, for which you need to climb up mountains, this one is underwater. You’ll also need a Diving Mask to make the process of obtaining the Jagged Deep black box easy.
Head to the location marked in the map below, and then swim your way down. Keep on going down until you see the plane wreck. There will be a door that you will need to forcefully open. Once done, make your way inside the plane, and you’ll be able to pick up the third Black Box from the floor.

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to hold your breath long enough to get to the Black Box. Therefore, you will first need to get the infinite breathability which is unlocked after completing The Sea of Sands quest, the 11’th story quest of the game. You can give it a try before unlocking this ability. But if you fail to hold your breath for an extended period of time, you will need to progress through the story first.
The Promontory
To get your hands on the fourth Black Box in our Horizon Forbidden West Black Box location guide, you will need to go through a bit of trouble. For the previous Black Boxes, you could open the door forcefully by using your spear. However, for this one, you’ll need a battery instead.
Thankfully, the battery is not that far away. After you reach the location marked in the image below, you’ll be able to find the plane wreck, where you’ll see that the door requires a battery to open. From this location, head to the east side and keep on going forward until you see a battery cell on the ground. Pick up this battery cell and take it back to the door, after which you’ll be able to open the door successfully.

After you go inside the room, you will come across a metal flower. Keep on hitting it with your weapon until it opens. Then, you will need to use your Vine Cutter to destroy it. As mentioned before, the Vine Cutter is an item you’ll acquire after completing the Seeds of the Past quest, the 12th story quest of the game. The Vine Cutter is necessary for this task, so you can not collect the fourth black box until you have completed the mentioned quest.
Bleeding Mark
The fifth black box is pretty easy to get as you just need to reach the top of a rocky mountain. The plane wreck is located at the very top, so make sure you use a flying mount as that will make things much easier for you. You can also climb the traditional way, but using a flying mount will save a lot of time.

After you reach the location, you’ll need to open the door, and the Black Box will be on the floor inside the room waiting for you to pick it up.
Stillsands
Go to the location mentioned in the image below, and you’ll come across a metal flower at the entrance of the site. Keep hitting the flower until it opens, and then use your Vine Cutter to destroy it.

After the metal flower is destroyed, the area will get cleared, and you will be able to see the door of the plane wreck. Make your way inside the room, and you’ll see a big box. Instead of using your pullcaster to pull the container away, go to it and pull it by hand as the pullcaster won’t work on it. The sixth Black Box is behind this giant box.
The Memorial Grove
Make your way to the marked location and head south. There, you will come across a bridge. While crossing this bridge, you will be able to spot the plane wreck on the left side. Make your way to the back of the plane, where you’ll come to a point where you will need to perform a double jump to get inside.

After you successfully use your grapple to enter the plane, keep on going forward, and you’ll be able to see the Black Box at the end of it.
The Salt Bite
The location of Salt Bite is left to where the Stillsands Black Box was, so you can also get this after you have acquired the sixth one. The eight Black Box is quite difficult to obtain if you don’t know where to go. In fact, it is the most difficult Black Box to find in our Horizon Forbidden West Black Box location guide. This is because a group of people decided to convert a plane wreck into a proper settlement. And the Black Box is hidden behind a vent inside a random building in this settlement.

After making your way inside the building seen in the image below, use your pullcaster to take out the vent. Then, climb up the vent and make your way inside the room. Keep in going forward until you find the Black Box on the ground.

I don’t know why the developers wanted to make getting the eight Black Box difficult. They might just want players to go through a little extra trouble. After all, you’ll be getting your hands on a mighty weapon through these Black Boxes.
The Raintrace
This is yet another Black Box for which you will need the Vine Cutter. While the previous plane wrecks were next to at least some sort of a landmark or a spot, the ninth one is in the middle of nowhere with nothing next to it. This makes it a little challenging to find.
To get this Black Box, you will first need to make your way to the location marked in the image below. You will come across the plane wreck there, with one half of the plane on the right side and the other on the left side. There will be a metal flower between them, which you can open by hitting it with your weapon. After that, you will need to destroy it using the Vine Cutter, which will make the vines in front of you go away.

Go inside the plane wreck, and you’ll come across a battery cell. You will need to pick up this battery cell and take it all the way back to the second half of the plane. After you insert the energy cell inside the door, you’ll be able to access the area where the Black Box will be on the ground.
Bonewhite Tear
This Black Box is located inside a plane wreck that is high up in the hills at the edge of the map. You will need to climb a lot in order to reach the top, so make sure you’re prepared for that. Or, if you want to save your time and energy, you can use a flying mount to get to the top. Getting a flying mount is recommended for the search of Black Boxes anyway since you’ll be visiting a lot of mountain tops, and a flying mount will make the process of collecting all Black Boxes in Horizon Forbidden West quick and easy.

After you reach the top of the hill, you will see the plane wreck with a door that requires an energy cell. Thankfully, it’s not that far away. Go to the right side of the door and keep on going until you see a campfire. Look around the campfire for the energy cell, and then bring it back to the locked door. Afterward, you’ll be able to pick up the tenth Black Box from inside the room.

Stand of the Sentinels
This Black Box is also high up in the mountains, another location that you can access easily if you have a flying mount by your side. If you don’t have a flying mount, then you will need to make your way east of the location until you come across a Campfire with a Zipline next to it. You will need to use this zipline to reach the platform. Then, go up and then keep going forward until you reach the location of the Black Box.

From here onwards, everything is easy as you just need to enter the plane and move the container out of the way by using your hands. The eleventh Black Box will be right behind this container.
Isle of Spires
Finally, the twelfth and final Black Box in Horizon Forbidden West can be acquired in the Isle of Spires. This is located far left on the map, on a small island.

The plane wreck is on a bunch of trees and a waterfall. It will remind you of the plane of King Julian from Madagascar. Head over the plane and keep on going forward until you reach the end of it. Then, drop down, and the final Black Box will be in front of you, all out in the open.
After you have acquired all of the twelve Black Boxes in Horizon Forbidden West, go back to the Memorial Grave and talk to Untalla. Hand over the Black Boxes to her, and you will receive an item for each one. After you give her all of them, you’ll get rewarded with Wings of the Ten. This is one of the best weapons in Horizon Forbidden West, and getting it will make your fights easier.

This marks the end of our Horizon Forbidden West Black Box locations guide. We hope that it will help you with acquiring all of them easily. The process may be time-consuming, but considering the number of items you’ll get in return for them, it’s totally worth it.
