Baldur’s Gate 3 Crowned The Best-Performing PC Game Of 2023

The RPG is also 2023's Game of the Year.

Story Highlights

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 is an action RPG, celebrated greatly for what it brings to the table in general.
  • The game has been crowned as the best-performing game on Steam in terms of units sold.
  • Other titles that went on to generate high revenue include Hogwarts Legacy, Lethal Company, and more.

Baldur’s Gate 3, 2023’s Game of the Year, keeps on making headlines, and seemingly, I don’t see an end to that anytime soon. Having released in early access in 2020 on Steam, the RPG was launched full-scale on Steam in August 2023, followed by subsequent console releases in the months that ensued. Little did we know that Larian Studios’ latest venture would end up becoming Steam’s highest-grossing title in terms of sheer revenue last year.

On a side note, here’s why we think Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

The revelation comes from Video Game Insights, a trusted data tracker platform, which published a report lately on the global PC games market. According to the collected statistics, Baldur’s Gate 3 has gone on to reign supreme in terms of both “units and revenue,” making a diversity of other titles trail behind it, including Hogwarts Legacy — the best-selling digital game of 2023 in the UK — and Lethal Company 2.

Other interesting pieces of information that I was able to spot from the report include about 13,971 games being released in 2023, a noteworthy bump from 2022’s addition of 12,407 titles to Valve’s PC gaming platform. Out of these sub-14000 entries, it’s reported that only 309 games were free-to-play, including The Finals—a surprisingly high-quality FPS developed by Embark Studios.

What’s more, is that Starfield has managed to make it on the list as well, being one of the top 3 releases on Steam by gross revenue last year. It’s made about $235 million via sales on Steam alone, despite its lukewarm reception calling out the space RPG’s lack of depth despite offering such an expansive universe to get into.

In other news, Baldur’s Gate 3 dev Larian Studios already seems to be thinking about its next project, as the company CEO Swen Vincke shed some light on the details last week, saying how he’s got the “Act 1” of his new venture sorted out. Of course, any sliver of that is still a ways away, and it’s likely to be a long time before Larian can officially come out with what it’s been brewing next.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released on August 3, 2023, for PC, with a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release popping up in the months of September and December respectively. eXputer reviewed the title and rated it 5/5, with reviewer Huzaifah Durrani highlighting its surreal worldbuilding, terrific turn-based combat, charming characters with their voiceovers, and just fantastic build quality overall.
