The PlayStation 4 has now amassed a staggering 120 million active users. This information comes from the LinkedIn profile of a Senior Director at Sony (thanks @bogorad222). In August 2022, industry analyst Daniel Ahmed of Niko Partners reported that the console’s active user count was 117.2 million in a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Back in the day, Sony revealed in the fiscal year 2016 presentation that the PlayStation 4 had over 70 million active players. The user base’s exponential increase over the years can be attributed to a multitude of factors, including an impressive lineup of exclusive games and consistent software updates, leading it to become the second-best-selling console of all time.
What makes this new milestone seem possible is the situation seen in the last few years. With the COVID-19 pandemic causing a global chip shortage which resulted in lower numbers of PlayStation 5 being in the market, people may have chosen to stick with and opt for the PlayStation 4 which was relatively more available and had a fleshed-out library.

Logic dictates that PS5’s scarcity at the time played a prominent role in retaining and even leading to the PlayStation 4 gaining more users over time. Furthermore, as recent exclusives such as God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West saw a release on the older console in addition to titles like FromSoftware‘s Elden Ring & Armored Core 6 along with SEGA‘s Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, it is evident that the system hasn’t entirely phased out yet.

Another thing that’s worth thinking about is the user count that goes unreported. It’s no secret that over its lifespan, the PlayStation 4 was cracked which led to many people reaping those benefits. If we take that number into account as well, the current value of 120 million might see a substantial increase.
Elsewhere, rumors are flying around about the PlayStation 5 Pro being in the works; that’s all it is right now though—a rumor. We advise you to take it with a grain of salt and await official announcements.
