The Vanaheim Realm in God Of War Ragnarok is filled with side quests and favors and one such favor that you come across in the jungle region is the Return of the River. It is one of the most important side quests that unlock new areas to explore in the game. Basically, in order to complete most of the other favors in the Crater of Vanaheim, including The Burning Skies, you will have to complete Return of the River first.

How To Start Return Of The River Favor
In order to start Return of the River favor, travel to the Western Plains Gateway in the crater region of Vanaheim. You will have to make your way back to the jungle from the crater in order to get the favor. Additionally, make sure that it is nighttime in Vanaheim. Just use the temple near the Wester Plains gateway to make the night appear.
From the Western Plains gateway, go forward and jump down the cliff. Then travel straight until you reach the point shown in the pic. From here, you will have to take a right in order to reach the destination.
When you take a right and go straight, you will see an entrance to the cave on the other side of the cliff as seen in the image above. That cave is the place where you’re supposed to go additionally. Just take the path on your right and it should lead you to the entrance of the cave. Also, be ready to fight some enemies on your way as well.
This is the location from where you can see the entrance of the cave. From here you’ll find the path that leads you to the cave as well. If you get lost, just arrive at the location shown in the image above.
When you enter the cave, follow the path till you reach the end. There will be some climbing that you’ll have to do in between. But once you reach the end, you will see no other of continuing further. However, on the left wall of the room at the end, there will be a path blocked off by wood. Use your Leviathan Axe to open up the path that leads you to the jungle.
At the end of the path, you’ll arrive in the jungle. From there take a sharp right and you’ll see a huge dam in front of you. The Return of the River favor will also begin at this point. You will have to go to the dam in order to complete the favor.
The location shown in the image above is where the Return of the River favor begins in God Of War Ragnarok. So, if you get lost after entering the jungle, just make your way to the location that you see in the image above. Lastly, on your way to the dam, you’ll encounter a lift. That lift takes you to the top of the dam in the game.
How To Solve Return Of The River Favor
When you arrive at the top of the dam using the lift, you will first be greeted by a bunch of enemies. These enemies are not too hard to deal with and you can quickly take care of them with your Blades of Chaos. Once you’re done killing the enemies, go to the first platform of the dam.
There will be some wooden crates on the right side. Break those crates and it will reveal a marker for the Draupnir Spear. Basically, you can use the Draupnir Spear to break the wall there. Breaking the wall will provide you with a way to the other side of the dam. There you will be able to open up the dam so that the flow of the river is returned to Vanaheim.
Opening The Dam
When you go to the other side of the dam, you’ll see a wheel that you have to rotate. But that wheel is stuck and the chains are covered with vines. You will have to use Freya’s sigil arrows to burn the vines additionally. Use your sigil arrows as shown in the image above. Then proceed to use Kratos’ Chaos Blades to burn all of the vines.
Now that the vines are burned, you can turn the wheel to open up the dam additionally. That will return the flow of the river to the Jungle and the Crater region of Vanaheim. Now you can explore new areas that were not accessible before in the game.
After turning the wheel, go back to the other side of the dam. A small cutscene will play followed by the Favor complete prompt. You will also get XP for Kratos and Freya that you can use to purchase Skills or upgrade Runic Attacks additionally.
