Dark And Darker Hit With DDoS Attack; Fans Frustrated As Game Becomes Unplayable

Rubberbanding, disconnecting, lagging, losing progress; you name it.

Story Highlights

  • Dark and Darker devs recently announced that the game is currently undergoing a DDoS attack, which can cause difficulties in the game.
  • As expected, there has been a surge in player complaints, ranging from rubberbanding and connectivity issues to lost progress due to disconnecting mid-game.
  • While fans patiently wait for an update on the DDoS attack, the game remains “unplayable” due to the ongoing issues.

In a recent Discord announcement, Dark and Darker devs notified the players that they are experiencing a DDoS attack, which can most likely cause issues in-game—lo and behold—the game is currently “unplayable.” It may run fine for some players, but there has been a massive surge in players reporting lags, disconnects, rubberbanding, and many issues, almost all allegedly happening due to the DDoS attack.

The devs have not given much information on the nature of this attack and how they plan to tackle it if they haven’t already. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time; the studio announced something similar almost precisely a month ago, and it caused some issues back then as well. One would think that such a severe situation would result in better protection, but there’s still much work that needs to be done.

Players have reported experiencing extreme rubberbanding, which, if you didn’t know, is when objects or players leap from one place to another without passing through an intervening space, almost as if they are warping. Some servers are also experiencing severe lag and ping, with more players reporting this issue in the EU servers. Although players blame many recent performance issues on the attack, the devs have yet to confirm.

Yeah, for sure lol we lost a bunch of gold and gear in the games we disconnected in, probably a part of the DDoS attacks, but I don’t know, losing all your sh*t cause of it sucks, especially when it’s like every other game,” says one Discord user.

It is possible that these are caused by something else entirely, but we can’t deny that the DDoS attack appears to be the most likely culprit in this situation. Moreover, the lack of updates following the initial announcement has also caused some frustrations, with many blaming the devs for not investing in better protection against such attacks. One Discord user said, “sh*t happens when you don’t invest in DDoS shields/protection LMAO.

The situation is undoubtedly bad, causing some players to take a break from Dark and Darker and return when it has become “playable.” It is unclear when these issues will be addressed. Still, considering how situation updates were pouring in after the devs identified the previous issues following hotfix #15, we can expect the same once the devs have progressed against this attack.
