The FF16 Best items can be categorized under two different sections, the first of which is the potions and tonics in the consumables section, and then there’s the almost limitless amount of important crafting materials. It is imperative to understand each of these items in Final Fantasy, as knowing about each one can make all the difference, especially if you’re playing through your NG+ playthrough on the hardest difficulty. Each item, whether it’s a crafting material or consumable, has its own uses, benefits, and qualities.
- The Best items in Final Fantasy 16 can quickly help you gain benefits, whether they’re HP-regenerating potions or rare crafting materials.
- Consumable items comprise potions such as High Potion, which can greatly heal you, and Lionheart tonics which can boost your Limit Break duration.
- You can also use the Last Elixir as an ‘ace-up-the-sleeve’ against tough encounters or boss fights in FF16.
- FF16 has a variety of rare crafting materials which are imperative components needed to craft different gear pieces at the Blacksmith.
- These include the highly valuable Orichalcum, Meteorite, and even somewhat common material items such as Desert Roses.
- Lastly, it is worth noting that most of these materials can be found while completing high-rank Hunts, treasure chests, as well as via buying from merchants.

Consumable Items

You can start collecting and hoarding the most consumable items early on as Clive will be needing these in a large commodity in order to himself during battle. These consumables primarily include potions, tonics, and other tinctures, which can provide different benefits such as heals or even stat boosts. For now, let’s discuss each of the consumable items distinctively and what they provide to you in gameplay.
1. Potion

EFFECTS | Instantly restores 20% of the maximum HP |
HOW TO GET | They can be found within chests while exploring the world as well as being purchasable via the merchants in settlements and towns. |
PRICE | 200 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | 100 Gil |
Starting off, we have the regular potions that you will receive right from the opening stages of FF16 during the prologue. These restore 20 percent of HP but keep in mind that the effect can be enhanced if you manage to complete certain sidequests to increase the healing amount. Do not worry about running out of them, as they can be found fairly often, especially in the early stages when you party up with Cid or Jill.
Furthermore, this applies to both of the healing potions as far as I know, but if you have no more space to carry either one, upon collecting a potion during exploration will automatically use it on Clive, which is a pretty good feature to keep you topped up on health at all times.
2. High Potion

EFFECTS | Instantly restores 40% of maximum HP. |
HOW TO GET | They can be found within chests while exploring the world as well as being purchasable via the merchants in settlements and towns. |
PRICE | 400 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | 200 Gil |
High potions work similarly to the normal ones I mentioned earlier, but the key difference is that you will be using them regularly towards the mid-to-end game sections of FF16 as they are the best healing items.
If you manage to increase the potency via the sidequests, then using these in critical situations will drastically restore your health, almost to the bare minimum from a low amount. Before setting off for the main story missions, which include their legacy dungeons, I would strongly recommend purchasing these high potions, especially if you’re in NG+ with the Final Fantasy difficulty.
3. Lionheart Tonic

EFFECTS | Gradually fills Limit Break gauge for 30 seconds |
HOW TO GET | Can be purchased from merchants as well as through Charon’s Toll at the Hideaway |
PRICE | 500 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | 250 Gil |
The Lionheart tonics are quite possibly one of my favorite items in FF16 and the best consumable, in my honest opinion, as these can help you build up your Limit Break gauge easily. Limit Break is a special transformation for Clive (much like Dante from Devil May Cry 5‘s Devil Trigger) where he can enter a berserk-like state to deal bonus damage using his normal and special attacks as well as regenerate health too.
Just like the healing potions, the Lionheart tonic can be upgraded via the aforementioned side quests to increase its inventory amount and potency. Activating the tonic during major story boss fights can help you shift the battle in your favor, as Limit Break will help you take them down with ease with its increased damage state.
4. Strength Tonic

EFFECTS | Increases attack power by 10% for 60 seconds |
HOW TO GET | Can be purchased from merchants as well as through Charon’s Toll at the Hideaway |
PRICE | 700 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | 350 Gil |
The Strength tonic increases your total attack power by 10%, and this consumable item’s effects can stack with the best accessories of FF16, such as Genji Gloves, which boost your attack by 5%. While it may not be noticeable at first, it can drastically improve your DPS against tough boss fights as well as against the challenging beasts in the Hunt activity.
5. Stoneskin Tonic

EFFECTS | Increases defense by 30% for 90 seconds |
HOW TO GET | Can be purchased from merchants as well as through Charon’s Toll at the Hideaway |
PRICE | 600 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | 300 Gil |
Next up is the Stoneskin tonic, which, just by the effects alone, is fantastic for players who are looking to tank incoming damage as much as possible. However, in my personal experience with Final Fantasy 16, you will heavily benefit from aggressively playing and using your Eikon abilities for combos instead of relying on a defense-stat-boosting potion.
So the best benefit to getting out of the Stoneskin Tonic would be to use it in the final phases of certain story boss battles or when they’re close to dying, as it will guarantee you don’t choke a defeat by boosting your defense to withstand the hard-hitting attacks easily.
6. Last Elixir

EFFECTS | Upon KO, it automatically restores all HP, fills the limit gauge, and increases attack power by 10% as well as defense by 30% for 60 seconds. |
HOW TO GET | It can be purchased from merchants and through Charon’s Toll once you reach the main quest called “Things Fall Apart.” |
PRICE | 20000 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | It cannot be sold |
Much like the Phoenix Downs from past Final Fantasy titles, the Last Elixir essentially allows you to revive yourself with the only condition that you can only carry only one of these with Clive and, of course, can only then be used once per battle. While these certainly can be useful against the endgame boss battles which you might struggle with, I didn’t find myself relying on them unless I was close to beating my opponent.
The price to purchase it is pretty hefty, but you shouldn’t have a problem with that since, towards the end of FF16, you will have so much Gil that you’ll wonder where to spend it all since aren’t any expensive items or gear in the in-game economy to purchase after all.
7. Elixir

EFFECTS | Instantly restores all HP |
HOW TO GET | It can be purchased from merchants and through Charon’s Toll once you reach the main quest called “Cid the Outlaw.” |
PRICE | 10000 Gil |
SELLING PRICE | 5000 Gil |
The last of the consumables include the Elixir, and while it is the potion that can grant you full heals, I didn’t see much benefit in using it as the normal or High potions proved more than enough capable of nursing me back to 60 or 70 percent HP. It is worth noting that merchants across Valisthea will stock the Elixirs once you have reached the “Cid the Outlaw” main questline in the plot.
